Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students work on behavior goals that are meant to strengthen their social skills. These include receptive and expressive language (listening and speaking), impulse control, turn taking, peer motivation, sportsmanship and stress management. To encourage them to participate in practicing these skills, I use board games. One specific example is using Apple to Apples The Big Picture. Student play the game while working on academic skills (using adjectives in descriptive writing) and work on turn taking. While it may seem that turn taking is a mastered social skill by middle school, some student struggle with remaining focused and effectively working with others.

Using board games as instructional tools allows them to practice a variety of social skills in the classroom setting.

Additionally, they build a repertoire of social skills that enhances day to day interactions with peers outside the classroom. Communication used during play allows them to effectively use verbal and nonverbal language to appropriately communicate their emotions and demonstrate sportsmanship.

My Project

My students will learn the importance of using their manners to request items from their peers, the significance of patience and turn taking, as well as good sportsmanship.

Research has proven that board games enhance social skills.

Board games don't have to be educational. The purpose is to teach skills such as communicating verbally, sharing, taking turns, waiting, and enjoying interaction with others. Other benefits of playing board games are fostering the ability to focus and increasing attention span. In addition, board games teach children how to win and lose.

The students will enjoy playing the games as they work on enhancing their social skills.
