I need a variety of Love and Logic resources to promote an enhanced school culture, including a Facilitator Lending Library, parent and teacher workbooks, and updated "Teaching with Love and Logic" books, among other items.
I am a school counselor at a public K-5 school in Tennessee. The students at my school are a diverse group culturally, ethnically, and economically. I work primarily with students in grades 3 through 5, providing classroom guidance and individual and small-group counseling services.
While I work with all students through whole-class lessons, much of my time is focused on the 10-20% of my students who are considered "at-risk" academically, emotionally, behaviorally, or socially.
The issues faced by these children make it difficult for them to form positive, trusting relationships with peers and adults; and their behaviors often impact their learning, the learning of others, and the overall classroom environment. Using interventions that build relationships with these students results in better-managed classrooms, fewer discipline issues, and more teaching time; and ultimately enhances the overall school climate.
I have found that the strategies taught through Love and Logic's teaching and parenting curriculums enhance my own effectiveness as a counselor and educator in building relationships and working with at-risk students. The materials provided in this project will update my own knowledge of these strategies and position me to share them with fellow educators and parents.
My Project
I am certified as a Love and Logic facilitator for both their teacher and parenting curriculums. However, since my initial certifications, Love and Logic has updated their materials. The revised edition teacher books, facilitator lending library, and age-based parenting packages requested here will allow me to update my knowledge of the skills and interventions highlighted in these programs. Using the requested teacher/parent workbooks, I will then be positioned to teach these skills to my peers for use in their own classrooms (peer-to-peer learning) and to offer the parenting curriculum to my students' parents and guardians.
The aim of this project is to enhance school culture through a systemic application of Love and Logic skills and interventions.
First, these materials provide relationship-building and classroom-management interventions. These interventions will help me create a learning environment that students experience as engaging and disciplined. While this will benefit all of my students, it is particularly critical for my at-risk learners. Second, these materials provide strategies and interventions that encourage all students to become more responsible and to develop self-discipline and problem-solving skills. In this way, these interventions promote the development of students' emotional intelligence (EQ). When students are more engaged, demonstrate greater self-discipline, and exhibit higher EQ, relationships between students and educators and students and their peers are stronger, a sense of community is fostered, and discipline issues are reduced. These conditions produce a school culture where students feel safe, valued, and a true sense of belonging.
As a school counselor, I teach hundreds of students, and if this project only involved my personal professional development, I could make a positive impact on my school's culture. But the beauty of this project is that I can share my own learning with my peers and my students' parents so that the impact of this project is exponential.
