My students are creative, thoughtful, passionate, and they are always excited to learn! As third graders, my students will begin the year dedicating themselves to building reading lives--being a reader will become a part of their own individual identity. It is during this year that they will be able to choose their relationship towards reading, and my biggest hope is that they cherish books as powerful opportunities to learn! And I hope that when they learn, they realize that they can act to make change in the world. In order to do this, I would like to promote as engaging of a classroom library as I can.
My Project
As adults, we read a lot of informational texts. We read newspapers, magazines, online articles, etc. in order to gain information. But as readers we aren't just reading to learn, we're also reading in order to make important connections to our own lives, and to the rest of the world. And we can act upon what we learn in different ways--keeping informed enables us to make change! One day, our children of today will also be informational readers, and they will surely be reading in order to act upon what they learn. Reading gives us that power to act!
This set of nonfiction texts I would like to add to my library will enable my students to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.
My hope is that this variety will allow every student to find something that will engage them and further their interest in their lives as readers.
