Mrs. Welch from Cincinnati OH is requesting educational kits & games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need magnetic letters, whisper phones, a nursery rhyme kit and other station materials to enhance their literacy station learning time.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students attend a Spanish language magnet school in Cincinnati, Ohio. This gives my students the opportunity to learn a second language as young children and learn about cultures different from their own. My classroom is a mix of Spanish-speaking and English-speaking students which means there are constantly two languages being spoken in my room at any given moment.
These students are full of curiosity, big dreams, zest and love.
They quickly learn to communicate in a way that surpasses the language barrier and encourage one another on a daily basis. Despite coming into kindergarten without previous schooling experiences or with minimal English, these students are eager to learn to read and count and share their stories with one another.
My students attend a Title I school which means the majority of my students come from a lower socioeconomic home. They don't have access to many learning materials at home, and many times they don't have people at home who can help them with their learning whether it be because of their work schedules or because they themselves are not literate or don't speak English.
My students need hands-on learning materials to help the fundamentals of reading stick.
The more hands-on active opportunities they have to reinforce skills, the more likely they are to retain those fundamentals. My project is to provide magnetic letters, whisper phones, rhyming activities, pocket charts, white boards/pockets, tactile letters and sentence strips for my students. These materials will be used in independent and small group stations to reinforce alphabetical knowledge, phonemic awareness skills, reading fluency and phonics skills. I use daily five literacy station in my room, and these materials will be put directly into those station for hands-on learning experiences.
When teaching a classroom with many English language learners, they need to be exposed to pictures, tactile materials, and the opportunity to explore things on their own. They won't retain information if it is only given verbally, and I want to increase the opportunities they have to practice these skills daily in different ways.
