Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from low-socio-economic neighborhoods and are "labeled" by schools as English language learners, special education, and/or at-risk. As the reading specialist, I work with small groups; however, our school was in great need of a library, so I now service all 420 students by providing a completely donated library, as well! All of the books in our school library have been donated by the impoverished community surrounding our school.
Our students are bright, eager learners, when given the appropriate tools to succeed!
They need and deserve so much, and the staff who surround them work tirelessly to provide them a quality education with the little resources available to them.
My Project
The literacy centers I am requesting will help my students improve their engagement in independent work, while I am working one-on-one with students. As the reading specialist, I work closely with 5-10 students at a time to encourage and build reading skills for my struggling and reluctant readers. We will use these literacy activity folders in center activities so that I can work more closely with one or two students at a time.
With the distraction of playing a fun game, students will be learning to read without the burden of feeling like it is too hard!
They are eager to continue to build literacy skills, but lack the focus to work independently, and with these center games, they will succeed!
