Our classrooms are comprised of 20 special little individuals who range in the ages of 3 and 4 years old. What makes us so special? We are part of a magnet school community that services students from all over the state of Connecticut, and that makes up our diverse population within our classroom community! Most of the students that make up our classroom families join us from inner city communities.
Each of these special little individuals carry their own needs in order for them to be successful in their first school experience.
Some of these needs include a range of disabilities such as motor delays, anxiety, Attention Deficit Disorders, sensory processing, developmental delays, and autism spectrum disorders. Our goals as teachers is to provide them with an environment that is comfortable and conducive to each of their learning styles in order for them to succeed. Unrestricted outdoor play makes for strong, confident, and capable child. It ensures healthy bodies, creative minds, academic success, emotional stability, and strong social skills. This project would benefit our entire preschool program to build their creative motor skills in order for them to be successful active learners!!!
My Project
The population that these materials we are using in our outdoor curriculum will be serving is our Pre-Kindergarten students within our six classroom. The project that we are undertaking is to extend our curriculum to the outdoors, by providing our students with experiences to help them grow both social emotionally and in with their motor skills. We will utilize these materials to plan and develop lessons that will help students fine tune and develop motor skills in order to be successful within the classroom. Research shows us that when children have exposure and experiences that enable them to experience outdoor play, it increases their cognitive and social emotional well being.
Unrestrained outdoor play and movement, builds students cognitive, physical, and social emotional skills so that they can thrive and learn.
The lessons we will be conducting in our outdoor curriculum will enable students to explore, and be hands on inquisitive learners. It will enable them to go against gravity to build a sense of spatial awareness, and explore the world around then outside hands on.
