Enhancing Focus and Motivation through Flexible Seating
My students need different options for seating throughout the school day. My shopping cart contains many different seating options to contribute to their learning, well-being and motivation. Most items allow for my busy learners to move.
I am a 4th grade general education and Special Education teacher, so my class is made of very diverse learners. Marshall Elementary School is a Title-I school where there are several students who struggle to have their basic needs met everyday. Because of my diverse group of students, I strive to provide a classroom in which every student has the space and place to be successful. Over the years I have worked with students with various needs from: Autism, ADHD, Intellectual Disabilities, ADD, Dyslexia, Emotional Disabilities, visually or hearing impaired, and learning Disabilities. All the meanwhile I have a class full of every other student in between, even your Talented and Gifted students.
My students are constantly moving around into groups, partners and independent time throughout the day, so I would like to have a classroom environment that supports that.
If you came into my classroom, you would not see a traditional class. Instead, you would find students sprawled out in different parts of the room working on their assignments, or collaborating in groups.
My Project
My classroom consists of a diverse group of learners. I have students who learn best by standing or sitting in non-traditional seats that allow them flexibility to move more freely. I like my students to have choices and make decisions daily that benefit their learning while better meeting their needs.
It is my goal to have a 21st Century learning classroom that meets the learning of all different styles, my students, as well as fostering an environment where students are eager to learn.
For years I have been spending my personal money on stability balls, cushions and chairs. However, they are becoming worn with use, and my students need different seating options. I have had several students with various disabilities, or behavior problems. Therefore, which improved by incorporating Flexible Seating in my class over the years. Behavior problems improved while providing my students receiving Special Education services with better options for learning. I only have a few options currently and students are highly motivated to have the chance to choose one of the options, however only a few students a day can sit in them. I have done a lot of research on flexible seatings, including the benefits and strategies for correctly implementing it. It is my dream to have a classroom where every student has the chance to sit and learn where they will do their best through the purchase of wobble chairs, stability balls, a standing desk, and floor chairs.
