Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember going to a museum with your family or your elementary school class when you were a child? Most of my students have never had this experience. This year due to budget issues, our school can not even send us on one field trip.
Our school is a Title One elementary school where more than half our students are on free lunch.
My first graders are enthusiastic students who are anxious to learn and are open to new experiences. Most of them are not exposed to various cultural experiences and our school does not have art, music or PE specialists.
My Project
I have requested glitter paints, chalk and oil pastels, and construction paper crayons to enhance the many projects my class will be doing this year. I want to expose the children to many of the masters through the use of books, posters and the Internet. We will study different styles of portraits and see what we can learn about the subjects of these portraits. The children will then use mirrors and follow step by step instructions to create their own self portraits. I will photograph each student holding his self portrait, and each child will write an autobiography to go with his picture. The students will also have fun making "Picasso Style" portraits and silhouettes of themselves. These materials will also be used in science and social studies activities.
Art sparks the imagination of children Listening ears perk up and the students ability to focus on directions is heightened.
They are ready to have fun, and learning should be fun. Art can enhance literature. It can be used to illustrate math concepts and clarify them. Parents tend to save those special art projects that their children make in the primary grades. My first graders and I will be so grateful for any help that you can give us to acquire the art supplies we have requested. Thank you.
