My students work hard in math class to learn real-life applications of the Common Core lessons we study. We partner with the engineering teacher in our building to work on projects to design and prototype their ideas.
The school where I teach is a mixture of upper and lower socioeconomic status, with many students coming from homes that do not have the financial means to provide the most up-to-date technology being used in today's world.
My school also has limited resources and has felt the pinch of reduced school funding.
My Project
As part of their application of math concepts, they use professional software (Auto Desk Inventor) to build 3D models of their proposed prototypes. If we had enough material that they were able to see their designs come to life with a 3D printer, it would allow them to better evaluate their designs for strengths and weaknesses and then complete the engineering process by modifying their designs for optimized results.
I am requesting 13 rolls of filament for our 3D printer to allow them to make their prototypes for themselves.
For those that struggle to visualize a 3D design, this filament will allow them to take their education to the next level by giving them a physical model of their design that they can evaluate and use to target their weaknesses in the design process and push themselves to create something better with their next project.
