Enhancing Dual-Language Learning

My students need 17 copies of "La Casa en Mango Street" in Spanish and the audio CD to build reading and listening comprehension while using an age- and interest-appropriate text.

As a second-year Teach For America corps member, I teach 5th-8th grade Spanish in two urban, low-income schools in Connecticut. This year I will be teaching 7th and 8th graders at a dual-language school (Spanish-English). Many of my students have lost their Spanish skills acquired in elementary bilingual classes, and their confidence for reading and written responses is pretty low. This year, one of our goals is to rebuild their reading and writing skills and further develop formal and grammatically correct Spanish among my students. Using the Spanish translation of the beloved "The House on Mango Street" will not only provide a meaningful text for our novel unit, but it will expose my mostly-Latino students to an excellent and culturally relevant role model (author Sandra Cisneros). In order to invest my students in reading and writing in a more formal educational setting, this book was chosen also because of its humor and similar experiences for minority youth growing up in the city. Your help, no matter how small or big, will make it possible for my Spanish scholars to increase their formal Spanish. Investment is key for student achievement, and a relevant novel will be an amazing resource. As Spanish proficiency becomes an increasingly valuable asset for college and careers, YOU can help at-risk middle schoolers develop life-long skills!
