Math can often seem intimidating to most students entering middle school. My students are eager to learn but lack the connections of how they use math every day in their personal and family activities. I am trying to change students' growth mindset by giving them access to challenging, yet highly engaging, STEAM projects that allow them to see math in action in real-life situations. By creating a classroom full of models and hands-on learning tools that are visual from day 1 of the school year, students become excited about the learning opportunities they will experience and are eager to come to class and participate fully in their own learning.
Hands-on math activities spark creativity, imagination, problem-solving, and collaboration in a way that ignites passion and a greater understanding of math concepts.
Imagine a math class researching jet planes, designing paper airplanes based on models of real airplanes, gathering statistical data through a series of flights, using engineering to problem solve, and ultimately redesigning their planes for greater longevity and/or accuracy. Now, imagine the excitement of students as they find out the connections between math, science, and engineering used to design sports equipment and then using geometry to plan, make 2D nets, design their own 3D geometric ball of choice, and then find the area and surface area of their sport masterpieces. For simpler and quicker hands-on learning experiences, the geometric learning cubes provide a hands-on, visual, and creative way for students to explore volume, 3D shapes, area, surface area, and even fractions throughout the entire year of math instruction. Students can also dive deeper into project-based learning using these simple cubes.
Please help my students see "STEAM" as a conduit for better access to greater math understandings and increasing "I can do math" growth mindsets.
