Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 9th grade English, but my students average at a 5th grade reading level. In order to improve their reading comprehension, I would like to institute literature circles in my classroom.
In literature circles, students learn to use reading strategies that improve their ability to understand a text. They read a book in a small group, discuss it, and teach it to each other. Because they are responsible for teaching the material instead of the teacher, they understand it more and learn it better.
Since my students read at different levels, I need a variety of books that I can use to reach all of my readers. Also, most of my students dislike reading, so I need high interest books that will show them reading can be enjoyable. This will encourage my students to read independently outside of class, something that has been proven to increase reading comprehension.
Unfortunately, my school does not have a variety of high interest books available for me to use in the classroom. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated!
