I am a sixth grade teacher of Language Arts and Social Studies. I teach in Slidell, Louisiana. I recently earned a Masters degree in educational technology. I want desperately to put my knowledge to good use for each and every one of my students. However, the computers in my classroom do not allow me this option. I only have two computers that work and they are both at the end of their life cycles. Each one freezes if it is used for more that fifteen minutes. Our school does not have a very large budget for technology and because of the size of the school, many resources are spread very thin. The school services grades 4-6. To make matters worse, "post-Katrina" life has taken its toll on technology both at the school and at home for the students. I have an interactive class website and many classroom activities that incorporate the use of technology. Therefore, it is crucial that I have at least four reliable classroom computers for students to rotate on and off of throughout the lessons. We do things like power point presentations, research, web-quests and reports among other things. In addition I would also find it greatly beneficial to have a good printer to produce the student work. We currently have no classroom printer. It is my firm belief that students who are exposed to technology in their curriculum are more prepared for the future. Therefore, I truly believe the students in my class would benefit greatly from the access to this equipment. In these trying times for our students many of them are displaced and do not have the access to such equipment. The school setting is often the only exposure that the student will receive.
