This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My English language learners come from all over the world and speak a variety of languages. Some of my students come from refugee camps. Others have come to escape regimes that would do their families harm. Still others have come as my relatives came in order to make a better life for their families. I have students at many learning levels. Some have absolutely no English language knowledge when they enroll. Others know a few words and are emergent learners. The biggest group of my English language learners are still learning basics.
Many of the families of the English learners I serve are just getting by financially and do not have the funds to buy basic school supplies and books for their children.
They need basic supplies to do their work at school. I would like get some class sets of books to make teaching more efficient. Additionally, I want to have the students write and illustrate from the books we receive.
My Project
The resources I chose are small group book sets for the themes of coral reef, children around the world, and a few Narnia books to replenish my old ones for my higher level chapter book group. I chose basic supplies like pencils, crayons, and markers for the kids to complete project extensions. The books are for students to read about kids around the world and about the coral reef habitat. The crayons, pencils, and markers are for kids to use to create extension projects from the reading.
I specifically want them to present little projects where they will read about, orally explain what they have read, write about, and draw to create murals for the coral reef topic and for children's homes around the world.
Students will use the books to read about homes other children live in, to read about the world of Narnia, and to learn about the habitat of the Great Barrier Reef. Students will use the pencils, crayons, glue and markers to complete the murals and writing. Other books listed will be for read aloud times and reference for their murals/reports. I also listed a rainforest book which I plan to use to compare/contrast that habitat with the coral reef. All four domains of listening, reading writing, and even speaking will be utilized with these projects.
When students have fresh materials to use, I know they are anxious to read and to get started on projects extensions from their reading as well as to follow through with the completion of their projects.
