A.B. Combs Elementary in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a wonderfully diverse school with a very international population. We have students from approximately 50 different countries. Two full time English as Second Language teachers serve about 100 students. English as a second language is a challenge for many of our students. As an English as a Second Language teacher at Combs, I want to make work meaningful for my students. During the day our staff works hard to meet their needs. But when the students go home, it is difficult to provide them with meaningful homework in English. Most of my students' parents are limited in English and can not provide their children support at home with work. I would like to provide an oral program of activities that could be used by the whole family. The Language First Program by Leap Frog Schoolhouse uses the LeapPad Personal Learning Tool and 36 theme-based interactive books that the whole family can use. This program helps English language learners improve English oral language and vocabulary skills. The interactive LeapPad Personal Learning Tool acts as a tutor, providing consistent audio support for students and parents as they learn crucial English vocabulary in the context of meaningful stories. I have the LeapPad Personal Learning Tools, but I need the funds to purchase The Language First Program to use on the LeapPads. Being able to provide this home support to my parents will help to make learning easier for my students who work so hard to succeed. Thank you for taking your time to read my proposal!
