This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Hello! Welcome to a little peek into my classroom. Let's start with my main attraction...the kids! My kiddos are amazing. They love learning, friendship, and anything and everything that includes bright colors, movement, and a challenge! My school's population consists of 99.9% Somali students. 97.5% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch and nearly all students are ESL. They have a lot of challenges in their lives, but it doesn't stop them from beating the odds and achieving their goals!
My Project
My students have recently transitioned from whole group instruction to personalized learning. Personalized learning in my class is independent/small group work that happens in station rotations. Having a population that varies greatly in ability makes teaching whole group ineffective and unsuccessful. I have students that are new comers to America and others second generation Somali Americans that grew up speaking English. Because of that, my students learning levels are all over the board! With individualized learning, I am able to meet my students at their level. This has created such a rich learning environment filed with team work, oral language practice and most importantly progress! I am the first teaching in my school piloting this style of learning and because of that I have very limited resources. I would love to continue this style of learning in my classroom but need the resources to do so! if you look at the resources I requested, you'll see lots of language development games, vocabulary activities, and sight word puzzles. We will use these resources during station rotations. Students will be broken up into groups of 4 students grouped by level. I will asses student level and place them with the resources that best targets the skill they need. I will also use these resources for small group instruction and 1:1 student practice. These activities will engage my students and help the learn in a fun and age appropriate way!
