This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach Special Education to high school students who exhibit various academic and emotional issues. The average student in my class reads at a fourth-grade level and tends to struggle with basic academic skills.
Often times, the most resilient people come from the most difficult circumstances.
Due to broken communities, families, and schools, my students' childhood dreams are sadly being replaced with trauma and disappointment on a continuous basis. The lack of school supplies necessary for students to succeed adds to the burden and disappointment in their lives. Unfortunately, every day is a struggle to obtain the basic academic supplies to perform.
My Project
My students struggle with reading and writing due to various disabilities. They are visual learners, which is why I’m requesting a photo printer and ink cartridge in the classroom, which would serve as an instrumental resource and strategy in their learning. Having the necessary technology for students to print out their own work and to be able to attach images and photos to their work would help them overcome and/or deal with learning barriers, which will help build student confidence.
I am requesting a laminator, as well, because laminating students’ print and visual work would not only maintain the quality of their work, but it allows for the student and their classmates to re-visit and re-use the assignment for further learning.
Implementing various learning strategies in our classroom, along with cooperative learning strategies, is imperative to student growth.
