Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Because of the many challenges they face, I am always looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences where we can all share and celebrate their successes.
My students are creative, clever and very eager for active, thinking experiences.
They are very excited for hands-on activities especially with reading, math and science. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and most receive free breakfast and lunch.
Students in each homeroom (Grades K-6) see me once a week for a math lesson. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their learning opportunities, experiences, and activities in my classes during the school day. I collaborate with their homeroom teachers to help enhance their math curriculum. My hope is that they become lifelong learners.
My Project
With this project I am requesting 16 Engineering STEM Construction Building Blocks Kits for Kids. Each kit contains flexible blocks that provide for the construction of 5 different vehicles: bus, racing car, helicopter, airship and bulldozer. I am requesting 16 kits so that the students can collaborate in small groups or create vehicles alone.
These Engineering building kits will benefit my students with opportunities to develop: fine motor skills, science and math skills, visual-spatial skills, and perseverance skills - all while having fun!
Students can use the manual to complete specific vehicle design challenges or use their imaginations to create their own vehicle constructions. Each kit includes "kid-friendly" wrenches and screwdrivers.
Students will benefit from making their decisions, testing their decisions, and revising their decisions all without reading and math computational restraints. Once the 6 to 8-inch vehicles are made, the students can play with them because the wheels are movable. Vehicles can be taken apart and built into other vehicles so that these kits can be used all this year with Grades 3,4,5,6 and in the years to come.
