Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 22 students in my class this year. I have recently visited a few schools with STEM classrooms. Our school does not have the means or space for our own STEM classroom, but I'd love to create a system in which students can check books and materials out to take home. I have the organizational tools, labels, and lessons. I just need the building pieces from K'nex and Klikko to build bridges, buildings, and other architectural designs. These take-home bins would cover all content areas. We've utilized many of these lessons in the classroom, but I would love to be able to provide ample opportunities for them to try more.
I believe that involving families in our classroom STEM projects has really allowed for students to have quality time with their parents and siblings.
My families send me pictures and videos of some of the take-home activities that I've sent this year and have only positive things to say about them. Take-home STEM brings learning into the home and parents are able to see what we're doing. If I can provide them with these take-home materials, I know they will be eager to read and build.
My Project
Students will be able to check out the books and supplies to use with their families in the evenings and weekends. I was inspired on Read Across America Day when my class made Oobleck. They were so excited to get their hands dirty and experiment with liquids and solids. They were especially excited to go home to tell their parents about non-Newtonian liquids. One of my families even did the experiment on a Saturday with a younger sibling, who is in pre-school. It's amazing to see the passion and eagerness to learn more when students are engaged in their learning.
