Our elementary school is in an urban, arctic region of the United States and house Pre-K to fifth-grade students. The students who attend our elementary in Anchorage, Alaska are from a variety of unique cultural backgrounds. Our school is known for the 70+ different languages represented in the community. The students also represent the lowest economy in Anchorage. Our school serves 100% free breakfast and lunch.
Despite the challenges our families face of like working more than one job or feeding and clothing their families, they appreciate the diverse community they are a part of and attend the many school functions like family nights, open house, multicultural night, winter festival, and a variety of field trips to support their students.
It is not unusual to hear Somalian, Russian, Spanish, Hmong or Chinese spoken in one classroom. As students attend our school they learn English, but their cultural backgrounds and languages are honored and respected.
My Project
This is a magnetic building set and it will help my students in several different ways! First, the set will allow children who have finished their classwork to explore on their own. They will create their own masterpieces. Secondly, they can partner up to work together on building something. Thirdly, the class will have pictures of other famous buildings like the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, and the Great Pyramids to recreate and learn about them.
Working with your hands is a very beneficial way to learn.
I have other sets, like legos, and connecting cubes, that the students like to work with so I know they will love a magnetic connecting set!
