Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a large school in a rural area. Many of my students come from hard working, low income families with 90% of my students qualifying for free lunch.
The school I work at takes great pride in helping the students overcome the hurdles of poverty through grit and hard work.
We emphasize a positive growth mindset and most of my students love coming to school. There is evidence of student pride in the classroom and they really enjoy seeing their work displayed. I enjoy working with them on activities that allow them to display their creative side. We draw, we dance, we sing all in the name of the love of learning.
My Project
Many of my students have never had access to building materials with which to express their creative and collaborative thoughts. I want to give them the bricks they need to make scenarios which we will then use as inspiration to write stories.
Learning to work together to build scenes as an inspiration to writing will build both social and academic skills.
Many of my students are language learners and will benefit from having a physical model to describe as they plan their narrative compositions.
We currently use a 4 picture model, which helps many of them organize their thoughts. Taking our pre-writing instruction into the 3D world of LEGO will add another layer of success to their work.
