I am a preschool educator at a STEM Magnet School in an urban school district. I have the privilege of teaching 15 naturally curious and active four-year-old students who come from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
My students need materials that will stimulate higher order thinking skills in the areas of mathematics and science.
Preschool students require hands-on learning tools to increase their understanding of cause and effect, spatial relationships, trial and error, and working cooperatively as a team player.
"Learning is Enchanting," is the theme of our preschool classroom. The motivating classroom space is decorated to simulate a fairy tale castle. Continuing with that theme, the fairy tale STEM kits I have selected will enable the students to increase their critical thinking skills in the areas of science and mathematics as they engineer a stronger house for the pigs, and build a stronger chair for baby bear.
Preschool children need rich, hands-on experiences to foster higher order thinking skills.
Making meaningful connections to experiences in their world increases the chances of impacting conceptual learning and understanding.
Learning about fairy tale stories is a part of our curriculum and pairing it with designing and engineering opportunities optimizes the students' learning. Additionally, through the use of the STEM kits, the students are learning how to work as a team member, develop problem solving skills, and story retelling skills.
