Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am in a California, inner-city, Pre-K-5, public elementary school. Our student population is a mixture of diverse ethnic groups with the majority being of Asian descent. Most students are first-generation born with ninety-four percent of our students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches. Fifty-seven percent of our English Language Learner student population is basic or below basic in reading and comprehension. Our program includes Chinese bi-literacy classes as well as regular general education classes for native and non-native English speakers. Our diverse community also includes Spanish, Russian, Mongolian, and Vietnamese speaking students. It is my goal to support all students with with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics activities in a Maker's Space setting.
My Project
Providing materials such as copper tape, batteries, and LED lights, students will, explore, create, test and re-test until he/she gets the desired results of his/her project. Traditionally, students come into the library media center as consumers; in other words, too many times, have come in to the library media center to read someone else's book and or play games that were created by someone else. Here at school, my goal is to interrupt that traditional environment by providing as many opportunities for every child to be, not just the consumer, rather come in with the mindset of a creator. Students take pride as explorers, developers, creators. Both boys and girls are given equal opportunity to engage in engineering.
