Our school introduced a STEAM program last year. We are a public school in Midlothian, VA. Our school has special education up to fifth grade for a total of 950 students. This new STEAM program allows all ages to come and enjoy the lab and create imaginative projects. Each week grades PK-5 and an autism class come through the doors excited to see what design challenge or technology project they will be working on for the week.
When you walk into our lab, there are sounds of children collaborating, communicating, and creatively designing many projects.
Just in one day, about 140 students will enter my classroom and use their imagination. Many days I get students that say, "I will see you today in STEAM!" The class is exciting and they love it.
My Project
In my classroom, I teach general education with some special education students grouped heterogeneously. During our math block, I hope to encourage my students to use these manipulative items to explore math concepts concretely.
During math stations, students can use these materials to problem solve and learn to work collaboratively.
Taking a math concept and "building" the answer helps before transferring it to paper. I have found that special education students understand mathematical concepts a bit easier by using manipulatives. These materials will not only work during math workshop, but will be great to use in the mornings during our exploratory time.
