Engineering Design Kits to Extend Curriculum and Provide Motor Breaks
Help me give my students a variety of Lego building products as well as an array of magnetic Picasso Tiles also to be used for small scale building and design classroom activities.
Middle school students are some of the most kind and friendly students you'll find anywhere. My 8th graders are fully emerged in their final year of preparation before transitioning to high school. Our school is located on the coast of Southern Maine and is surrounded by large, open fields that give us the opportunity to bring the classroom outside throughout the fall and spring.
In our 8th grade physical science class, my students are engrossed in developing a strong foundation in Chemistry and Physics that will serve them well into high school and beyond.
The budding scientists in my classroom are exposed to an array of engaging and relatable physical science activities and demonstrations in an effort to hook their interest in the sciences for years to come.
My Project
This Donors Choose Project includes a variety of Lego-style, fastener-connection blocks as well as magnetic building tiles that students will be able to use creatively when engaged in relevant units of physical science curriculum and also to keep their minds and hands busy during daily work periods after all other classwork has been completed. Students who are quick to finish assignments during work periods, or simply need a motor break from the daily academic grind, will benefit immensely from this variety of building materials. The hands-on and body-movement aspects of designing and building structures with these materials will allow students to use their creativity and parts of their brains that might not otherwise be accessed during a typical school day.
My goal, with this Donors Choose project, is to compile a classroom set of basic magnetic and click-together building blocks that can be divided up into smaller engineering and design construction kits.
These kits, along with teacher guidance, will give my students the opportunity to access parts of our middle school science and technology curriculum that many students are not fully exposed to during the typical school year.
