My Students
Science isn't just information. It's doing something with information. My students need to build, examine, and modify structures to feel what it's like to be an engineer.
My students are 72 fifth graders with young and adventurous spirits.
They're dedicated to learning what they can, and waiting for more opportunities to DO. Our school has been recognized nationally for it's character education program, and we have a student population that makes it easy to see why such a distinction was awarded.
My Project
My students will carry out an Engineering Design Project. Students will work in pairs to build a catapult with a standard design. After testing their production, the can make modifications to improve the launching capabilities of the structure. However, their modifications are limited by budget constraints, making decisions a challenge - just like real life! My students need jumbo craft sticks, masking tape, and duct tape to build and modify their catapults.
I hope to send them to sixth grade with a strong understanding of the engineering process, and how the laws of science and demands of a budget intertwine to make advances in technology.
