My students need materials to complete engineering design challenges throughout the year. They also need tools such as flashlights, measuring cups, and magnets for hands-on discovery and research.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach kindergarten and 1st grade enrichment in a Title 1 school in East Cleveland where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. All of my kids come from low income neighborhoods and are often faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. I want to provide my students with the tools and materials they need to succeed and excel at school.
Students in the enrichment program will have the opportunity to explore a variety of skills that are above and beyond what is offered in the traditional classroom.
Students will develop specific problem solving skills such as creative and critical thinking while being immersed in rich themes and topics that span all curricular areas. There will be an emphasis on STEM education, including coding and engineering design challenges.
My Project
These materials are essential for my student's exploration of their world in enrichment. The hand magnifiers and other supplies will allow them to explore such topics as rocks, light, sound, and motion in a hands on, engaging way.
Envision a room of 5 and 6 year old students working in teams to build a house out of cardboard, play dough, tape, Styrofoam, and string that will keep ice from melting.
These students will be met with numerous engineering challenges throughout the year that will be based on the topics we research and discover. Their critical and creative thinking skills will be developed and stretched as they work together to plan and create solutions. The materials provided through this project would help make these design challenges a reality.
