This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My STEM students are an energetic group that love to learn! They start each day with a bright smile and an eagerness to know what the day will bring. My students are from a very small community just outside of Detroit, Michigan. They all qualify for free breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner. Life is not always easy for our students, but they come to school with a smile on their faces each day and a thirst for learning. They leave each day feeling proud of what they've accomplished.
My Project
This is my second year teaching a STEM special class. I see grades K-2 & 6 once a week and grades 3-5 twice a week. My students are very excited for this class, but since this is a new program, my resources are limited. This STEM Outbreak class kit is perfect for my Fifth Grade classes. It gives my 5th graders the chance to become biomedical engineers as they explore how to prepare for outbreaks of highly contagious diseases. They will work in coopertive groups using the Engineering Design Process to design an antiviral to stop a newly discovered virus from infecting a model cell. All of the materials are included in the set to complete this challenge!
This kit follows our state standards, and my students will grow so much from using them!
Thank you for making our STEM class an exciting place to learn!
