Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We focus on becoming mathematicians, letter investigators, reading experts, authors, global citizens, scientists, and engineers in our classroom. My goal is to share experiences that some may not have the chance to experience because of their diverse backgrounds. Some come from a low socio-economic background, are recipients of free or reduced-price lunch, or are English Language Learners (ELL), while others are Spanish Language Learners (SL). Every day, they must overcome adversity to reach their goals.
My students have become invested in their learning and become problem solvers and collaborators.
They are committed to coming to school every day ready to learn and do their best. By mastering our academic goals and standards and gaining strong character qualities, my students will be set up for success. My students will be impacted in a way that will push them to the next level to be college-ready. They will have more ways to demonstrate their knowledge and ways of thinking. First grade is such a valuable asset and so very important to set them up for success. It gives them a solid foundation academically that they will need for the rest of their academic journey.
My Project
I would love to give my kiddos the opportunity to expand their thinking with the Sphero Indi robot. Indi will give my kids the chance to broaden their thinking, problem solve, design and create mazes, and learn the beginning principles of coding. To be able to learn these skills screenlessly makes it possible for more students to work with Indi.
Indi will sharpen my students' creative problem-solving and computational thinking skills.
My kiddos will learn cause and effect, pattern recognition, the basics of block coding, and understand abstraction - all while having fun! We will use Indi to integrate coding with sequencing and retelling a story. Students will work on this skill using the different coding tiles provided with Indi, giving each tile a specific use. For example, one coding tile will introduce new characters, another coding tile will be for the setting, etc. Students will be able to orally retell and execute their programs while presenting what they have coded using Indi. Students will learn to collaborate with their peers, retell and sequence a story, create a maze and execute their code and present to an audience. Sequencing is an important component of problem-solving across subject areas.
