Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an amazingly diverse group of 24. We are comprised of English Language Learners from Mexico, Central, and South America, Africa, Iran, and Afghanistan. We are located in close proximity to several military installations including Marine Corps Base Quantico and Fort Belvoir, and I have several students who are dependents of active duty military personnel.
Along with cultural and ethnic diversity, we also have a neurodiverse group of kids.
We have some SPED friends who spend time with us during social studies and science. A number of us are ADD or ADHD kids who benefit from engaging ways to learn and from flexible seating options that will help use cope with our high energy level.
Our two greatest academic challenges this year will be increasing our multiplication fact fluency and improving on reading comprehension and stamina. We are part of a STEM focused school and do our best to integrate projects and experiments to make learning come alive!
My Project
We are a STEM focus school, and I want to provide my students with a cross-curricular engineering experience. We will use these materials daily to plan, build, and then reflect on what we have learned through these hands-on activities.
These STEM kits will make learning authentic for my students!
This equipment will provide tangible, real-world science, technology, and engineering experiences that will enhance academic development and cognitive growth. We will tie these experiences to language arts by reflecting on the engineering process and our results in writing.
Specifically, the Magna-TIles will provide opportunities to build 3D solids, which ties directly to our math standards. Create-A-Chain Reaction and the Magnet Activity Lab will provide learning experiences that relate to the force and motion science standards and will help them build background knowledge needed to be successful in the upper grades. As a STEM school, experience with the Hydraulics and Building Bricks STEM kits and Electricity Activity Lab will expand student horizons and provide a foundation for future exploration and academic success.
As legendary educator John Dewey said, "Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results.”
