My students are special need students with a wide range of diagnoses. They attend a special day school in our public school district that meets each students' specific special individual needs. Hands-on engaging activities allow them to actively learn. They come from just as wide of backgrounds, for some students school is the only normalcies in their lives and place where they are truly accepted for who they are. These are wonderful children in our K-12 building that deserve all the advantages and benefits of regular education buildings.
My Project
These supplies will allow my students to really become engaged in science and the world around them. For the first time, they will be able to really see, touch and interact with the things they have read about in science books this far. The microscopes will give them a real understanding of how small and complex cells are. Students will be able to understand the causes of the weather they see every day and begin to learn how meteorologists predict the weather coming. Living in and going to school in Kansas and a town that has previously been devastated by a tornado these activities and knowledge can give them a better understanding of how and why tornadoes happen. They will learn about rocks and minerals and begin to differentiate through the rock experiment. My hope for them is to learn about space and how our actions here have an impact on the environment.
