My Students

Our school is a K-7th grade dual-language immersion charter school in the DeKalb County School District of Metro Atlanta, Georgia. We are a multi-racial, multi-cultural, and multi-lingual community. Our Kindergarten students learn math and science fully immersed in either Spanish, Mandarin or French, while learning language arts and social studies in English.

Our students are special because not only are they immersed into a new language, but they are challenged to excel and be top performers in English language arts and math as well.

We utilize a variety of teaching methods to make sure these students are getting everything they need at school. The parents are also integral parts of the learning process and support the work at home that their children are doing in the classroom. The student bring home books and other class materials home to show and share with their parents. It's a team effort!

My Project

Children enter my Kindergarten class with a wide range of reading skills, language backgrounds, and learning styles. It is critical to engage each of theses different learners to help instill a love of reading. Using storybooks teaches children valuable reading skills in a fun way.

Storytelling books for emergent readers not only helps children learn to read, but teaches them how to understand, interact and enjoy reading.

I have 3 carefully chosen texts that teach these skills. These texts follow a conventional story structure and have illustrations where match the words on each page, an important early reading strategy. The puppets are a way to engage all learning styles, with an emphasis on tactile learning. They will help teach story retelling, an important skill in learning how to understand the books we read. The recorded books will help students who require more repetition the ability to build greater story language while practicing important reading skills. These are especially helpful for supporting our English language learners.
