Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a remarkable group of 1st grade students who are eager to learn. Their hard work and determination is something to be admired. Like many students today, they are motivated through the use of technology. Our district has a 2:1 student-to-iPad ratio, so I incorporate technology in various ways throughout the day. Currently, I am limited to free educational websites and apps allowed by the district.
In our Title I school, over 80% of our students are considered economically disadvantaged.
Over 50% are English Language Learners, and some of them are new to the United States and hearing English for the first time. Many look forward to school experiences as these experiences may not be possible at home. Despite the challenges that some face, our students strive to do, and be, their best. They are proud to be Champions!
My Project
My students love using technology, but they need access to technology that engages them in creative learning along with their peers. Unfortunately, our classroom is currently limited to free educational websites and apps in which they are mostly working on their own. The Osmo Gaming Systems will allow my students to collaborate as they use problem-solving to practice spelling, vocabulary, geometry, addition, subtraction, and even physics and engineering! I envision utilizing this educational Osmo technology daily during small group rotations in both Guided Reading and Math. Three systems, plus 2 Pizza Company games, will ensure that all students are able to utilize this learning resource collaboratively. I also see it as a great resource for indoor recess which occurs often in our Midwest community. Osmo gaming is so much fun that students won’t even realize that they are learning.
