My students are a diverse group of learners. There are a wide range of abilities and learning styles within my classroom. As an educator, I strive to meet the individual needs of each and every student. Our school’s mission is “to prepare all of our students for success in high school and beyond, by providing a standards-based curriculum that fosters community service, student leadership, appreciation of the arts, social and emotional development, and an understanding of diversity in an inclusive environment.”
My Project
Word study helps children become efficient problem solvers of words in reading and writing. We use Donald Bear's Words Their Way program. This involves the students getting weekly word sorts, that are differentiated, based on the stages of spelling development.
This project includes engaging materials for the students to use when working with their weekly sorts.
The pocket charts are useful visual tools for the students to use when partner sorting their words together. The pocket charts offer a unique way for the students to display their sorts. The rubber mats are used for organizing their sorts and keeping the pieces from getting scattered. First graders tend to lose their word sort pieces, but the rubber mats help keep their pieces organized. The laminating sheets are needed to be able to work with the words without ruining them. If the sorts are laminated, then they can be reused and stored. The stamps and wiki sticks are engaging and help the students to build and see their words in different ways. Students love building their words using different materials, and the stamps, stamp pad, and wiki sticks reinforce the spelling of the words in a creative way.
Students learn when they are engaged, and this project allows for students to have organized and fun word study activities.
