My Students

I have happily moved from 3rd grade to 1st grade this year! The transition has allowed me to realize the power and importance of providing access to knowledge in a variety of ways. Without this support, my firsties will not get the most out of each lesson or group.

My school is located in a suburb of Raleigh, NC.

My students come ready to learn, as many of their parents have instilled the importance of education within their children. They get excited about anything and everything, and I am so thrilled to be working with such open minds. With that said, they are also still 6-8 years old, and many of their cognitive abilities are still developing even though they can carry on a conversation like a 2nd or 3rd grader. One of these skills, is the ability to remain focused on lesson tasks. Even with engaging lessons, students still need hands-on manipulatives and tools to instill this knowledge into their working memory. This has been my biggest focus moving into first grade - student engagement. Coming from 3rd grade, my students were able to stay on-task longer and engage in more time consuming tasks independently without distraction. I know that these resources will help give my 1st graders some support in these areas.

My Project

The privacy partitions are essential for student independence. Even a sneeze from a nearby student can result in a student losing their train of thought. For this reason, it is crucial that students have an opportunity to lessen the distractibility of their surroundings and this can become difficult in a classroom with 24 students. These partitions are the perfect solution! Students love having their own mini "office" at their desk. The timers will be essential for students and partners to follow through with instructions in all areas! At this time, I only have one timer for the classroom, and it has been a great motivator for even my most distractible students. They love taking control of the timer and their independence. The games will serve as a motivator to stay engaged in independent tasks. After successfully completing stations or assignments, I will have the option for students to use these more "fun" games as a reward for staying focused and completing their assignment.

This project will help me more than you could know!

This is my first year at this school, and I do not have many resources to work with during this transition, especially considering my move from 3rd grade to 1st grade. At this point, even an empty jar for classroom storage excites me, for I have so little. With that said, you can imagine how much these resources could enhance my classroom! Thank you for taking the time to read about my project! I truly appreciate your time and dedication.
