Do you know your learning style? Do you learn best by seeing, hearing, or doing? So much of school is geared to the visual or auditory learner. I want to build a small area in my library that is focused on the under served hands on learner.
My school serves students from Preschool through Grade 6 and our students come from a broad range of backgrounds.
While some of them come from traditional middle class families, just over half live in poverty. My library strives to serve as an equalizer for students.
My Project
As part of my goal to increase engagement of ALL learners in my building I am developing an area in my library that is dedicated to hands on learning and creating. This area is known as Creation Station and currently consists of very simple projects including “Make your own bookmark”, drawing books, and puzzles.
Through this project I want to provide a more robust maker area, which will allow my students to dabble in electronics, origami, and crafts, among other things. Working in Creation Station will not only engage my children and give them opportunities to experiment with materials they may not have at home, it will also teach them valuable life skills. Students will learn by doing, and they’ll learn that they occasionally have to try several times before they achieve a desired result. In short, they’ll learn persistence.
Your donations will provide materials that will make the library’s maker space (Creation Station) a well-stocked, diverse place for students to try their hand at a wide variety of activities.
One week, they may experiment with electronics with LittleBits. Another time they may learn how to fashion a wallet or bracelet with duct tape. Future engineers may build with Lego or discover the hidden possibilities in a simple piece of paper through origami.
