Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 8th-grade cluster is made up of students from a wide variety of backgrounds. This project is specifically geared toward a small group of students that are failing two or more classes. These students often feel insecure about being part of a group in class. By making them leaders in their class, they will come to class more and therefore do better in all of their classes.
In my district close to 60% of students receive free or reduced lunch, this means that many do not have the basic supplies that we take for granted.
When students don't have the resources that other students have they will be more likely not to do their homework and therefore, will not get the time to interact and learn to use the technology correctly.
My Project
I am continuously amazed when I see a student who never participates emerge as a leader when the subject is something they understand more than their peers. With this in mind, I am looking to get two Ti-84 graphing calculators that I can teach a select group of disengaged students to use.
By teaching the students ahead, they will have the confidence to teach their peers and therefore, they will have the incentive to come to math class, where they will be seen as leaders.
Two students have been chosen from each of my classes and they will be the experts! The students selected all have one thing in common, they are failing 2 or more classes and rarely become the "expert" in their classes. I plan to give them that opportunity.
My plan is to start by teaching the students how to use the calculator and then allowing them to use them for a while before the other students are introduced to the Ti-84. The original group of students will be the class experts. This will give them the opportunity to feel proud of their ability in math class and also put them in a position where others in the class will look up to them for support and guidance through the year. My hope is that this will lead to greater attendance, higher grades and classroom participation from these students.
