This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each student's cultural background is as essential to their learning as their learning style. Multilingual learners make up a third of our student population. My school is a low-income, Title I school that educates Transitional Kindergarten through sixth-grade students in the Santa Maria Valley. I am blessed to teach Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students with mild to moderate disabilities. My students are eager to learn despite some challenges they are born with (autism, hearing, visual, cognitive). Creating a love and excitement for learning as well as a safe, welcoming environment are two of my goals as their teacher. For many of my students, this is the first time they have been away from their families.

Through music and movement and hands-on learning, my students are exploring the Common Core curriculum in new ways.

It is important to build a strong classroom community where my students and I can discover how to best support them. Creating multiple opportunities (board games, social-emotional learning, music, and tactile activities) ensures I am able to connect with my students. I cannot imagine a more rewarding career.

My Project

Small groups are central to our learning environment. With multiple magnetic boards, books, and puzzles, each student will have his/her own magnetic board/book for letter/number tracing. This kinesthetic activity will strengthen their understanding of letter shape, name, and sound.

My students are diverse in the way they learn as well as in their learning levels.

Activities must be engaging, varied, and challenging. These books and puzzles will not only be utilized for direct teaching but also for students who may need a scaffolded activity. Students may also use these materials as a fun learning opportunity when they finish another task earlier than other students. Academic puzzles and books are perfect activities for students who are overly active and need a short transition task.

Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students benefit from multiple, kinesthetic opportunities for learning these crucial foundational skills. With your generous support, I will be able to offer multiple, small group centers where my students can be supported at their level.
