Disengagement has become a common denominator throughout our school district over the last few years. From elementary to high school students it has become difficult to keep students in school on a regular basis. There are many factors that are causing this disengagement from broken homes to emotional barriers. Within our district, there is also a large number of students with special needs. As students struggle with language or learning barriers they become frustrated and disengaged from their learning.
Each student is unique in their own way, and I want my classroom to be a place where they can comfortably learn in a safe and exciting environment.
In my classroom I encourage my students to create, present, and work together as a team! My sixth-grade classroom is comprised of 50 hard-working students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
I encourage my students to bring their creative mind into our classroom every day, but to do so we need basic classroom supplies! Some of my students in the past few years have attended less than 85% of calendared school days. This means they are missing a majority of the content being taught in class. I hope to engage these students to come to school daily and use them as an incentive for their attendance. Poster paper, glue, tape, and markers are just the essentials my students will need to take a hands-on approach to learning and allow them to demonstrate their learning in a different way.
My colleagues and I are collaborating to fight disengagement by personalizing our students' education while trying to connect with our students on a daily basis by allowing them to express themselves freely through art.
By donating to this project, you are helping make each lesson interactive for my students. I have seen serval instances of absenteeism and lack of focus throughout the school due to many different factors. However, I feel confident that implementing these simple art supplies into the classroom is a sure way to keep students engaged, focused, and motivated to learn every day!
