I need professional development resources to help our staff learn more about engagement strategies to help our students become self-directed, lifelong learners.
Returning to teach at the high school that I graduated from was a dream of mine and I have been here for three years. Since I graduated the school has become much more diverse, especially in the areas of race, income, and secondary education. A majority of the school is now on free and reduced-price lunches and many students are working to become the first person in their family to attend college.
Many would argue that diversity is a major challenge in education, but I would argue that our diversity has become one of the key strengths of our school, as we work to understand and better each other.
My Project
As a new department head, want to help my department blossom into the best social studies department in the state of Oklahoma. As budgets have been slashed in our state, one of the primary targets of the cuts has been in the area of professional development.
Our school is racially, economically, and culturally diverse and I want to help equip myself and my colleagues with the resources to reach each of our students and inspire them to strive for great things.
Over the years there have been great changes in the surrounding community, the school, and the field of education itself. With books like Teach Like a Champion 2.0 and Hacking Engagement, we can learn how to help both students and teachers create an environment where students take ownership of their learning and are self-driven by their interests.
