Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently work in a school district that is low-income. About 60% of students receive free and reduced lunch. Not only that, but the school is also the largest in the state with almost 3,400 students. Because it is a large school it is difficult for all students to have the same resources in and out of school. Many students do not have access to technology at home. This population is largely composed of the ELL students. Not only do these students have to assimilate into this new society quickly, but they also lack many resources other students have. My goal is for all students in my classroom to feel equal because they all have access to all the resources needed to achieve in this new fast-paced technology growing world.
As a science teacher, I want to make science education attainable to all students no matter their financial or language barrier.
Students are the future of the world and I, along with every teacher will do our best to make sure all students are capable of being the leaders of our society. All students should have the skills to succeed and it starts in my class!
My Project
"We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology." Carl Sagan ~ Our future is our students. Many students do not know how to use or do not have access to technology. The lack of technology in the classroom already sets my students back. The science department composed of 25 teachers have to share one Chromebook cart for all of our students.
Students are more engaged and prepared for the future when the content is relatable to their everyday lives.
By having technology, like the Amazon Tablets it is allowing students to integrate technology with their learning. Chemistry is an applicable to our everyday lives. However, it is difficult for students to wrap their heads around difficult concepts. Because science overall is seen as difficult students become disengaged. With these Amazon tablets, I can have lessons using simulations online that are difficult to produce in class. This will allow visual learning while also exposing students with technology that is needed for their future.
Also, the tablets will be used for interactive lessons so that all students, even those who speak little English are always engaged. Many students who are not fluent in English lack engagement because of being embarrassed of speaking in front of a class. Using lessons that integrate technology, for example, using Nearpod (an instructional software) for class discussions students can type their answers. This will allow all students to answer discussion questions instead of just one student and promote full participation even from students who shy from speaking out loud.
