Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a diverse student population from an urban area in Phoenix, Arizona. The majority of my students come from humble, hardworking families who often struggle to put food on the table. In fact, many of my students are responsible for contributing to basic household expenses such as electricity and water. Notwithstanding these challenges, I never cease to be amazed at the gratitude and energy with which these students attack their studies.
Many students aim to be the first in their family to graduate from high school or college.
They are ambitious and motivated to make the most of their public education. I'm also impressed by their creativity and desire to improve the community around them.
I could not ask for a better group of students to teach!
My Project
My Freshmen English classes will be studying "the Hero's Journey." In focusing on this theme, I would like to use a classic coming of age story to which my students can relate and which will engage their personal interests.
Specifically, I would like my students to study the classic, "Catcher in the Rye," so they can learn from the universal struggles inherent in growing up and decide whether the protagonist can be considered a hero to teenagers everywhere.
Unfortunately, neither my school district nor my high school have sufficient copies for my students.
Please help supply my students with a class set of "Catcher in the Rye." By helping, you will help my students relate to literature and better engage with their studies.
