Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Students in grades 9-12 at in a diverse and exciting classroom. Students in my class started the year excited to explore the world of engineering but as we get more into the mathematics, interested and attendance declined. They are inventive and creative in solving real-world problems, but sometime have trouble getting to school on time if at all, both have negatively affected their grades . As we build relationships with our students, we can customize much of the learning, in hopes to bring the desire to spark more interest.
We want to add some exciting projects to our program to excite our students to come to school, so we are building an Elethrathon Race Car.
To build this vehicle, will will break in to student focused teams. We will personalize the teams with the students interests and skills, but each student will have to work on two teams: one they are"good at" and one they "want to be good at." In additions to the drafting and design team, we need a materials processing team who will have to learn cutting and welding.
My Project
In order to interest our students in both Welding and Engineering, we thought it would be good to introduce plasma cutting. We have built a welding and cutting booth in our classroom and just need a few more supplies to get going. Our cutter requires compressed air to run, so we are asking for an air tank and regulator.
The Hands on Learning that we plan to do in our materials processing unit will give them skills for the future and get them to come to school on time.
We will teach them about cutting and welding while building a vehicle that they designed. This project will strengthen relationships with my adult volunteers and the students as well as help the students connect to the need for math in real world applications all while helping them develop skills that they could use after high school.
