My students come into my classroom everyday and I can tell that they are excited to be there. I teach at a title one School, in a rural community in Oklahoma. Because our community is so small, the students and families are very close. They share a love for their community, their school, and their teachers. My third graders come from a variety of backgrounds. Some come from families that are able to give them financial and academic support. However I have even more that come from low income families, and or families that give little academic support. My kiddos know that they have the love and support of a wonderful group of teachers when they walk into our school.
My Project
As a third grade teacher, I have the pleasure of preparing my students for their first state mandated test. While preparing my students to take these tests, I introduce and teach a wide variety of reading skills. Rather than using a basic reading textbook to teach these skills, I have chosen to teach these skills using novels. We read novels such as, "Charlotte's Web", "Shiloh", "Stone Fox", and many other wonderful stories. Through these novels, I introduce reading skills such as, main idea, cause and effect, plot and theme, as well as many others. I feel that these novels keep my students engaged and make their learning experience more entertaining. The novel, "The Bad Beginning " is a wonderful novel that I would love to share with my students. It will not only be a book that they love to read, but it will also be a book that allows me to keep them engaged and entertained while they learn valuable reading skills..
