Engaging Students With Fiction And Nonfiction Books

My Students
My first graders are on the verge of falling in love with reading. These six and seven year olds are growing into voracious readers and are very impressionable when it comes to meeting new characters or learning new facts about nonfiction topics.
Good books are defining who these children will become. Whether it be character building fiction stories or interest encouraging nonfiction books, my students are ready to jump in and engage new thinking that they can share with the class.
My Project
This project will support our growing readers as they master decoding, fluency and comprehension strategies within both fiction and nonfiction books.
Our first graders have the potential to grow as readers more than they ever will at any other time of their lives.
These books stand to foster our students' love of reading and learning. The students will get to keep the books with them in their book boxes to practice reading during our classroom's independent reading time. The variety of new books will allow for students to continue to cycle through different genres of books (new characters, like Zelda and Ivy, or interesting nonfiction topics, like Robots in Space) from our classroom library and encourage their growth and reading experience at their own level.
