Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"If a child cannot learn in the way we teach, we must teach in a way the child can learn." -unknown. Students need to be engaged and actively involved in their learning in order for it to be meaningful.
My classroom is made up of 27 ESL students in a low income, inner city school.
I have a variety of academic levels in my classroom - from students performing below grade level, to students who speak no English, to advanced learners. Many of my students have difficult home lives and school is a safe haven for them. Despite these challenges, they have an enthusiasm that is contagious. They come to school each day eager to share what they know and to learn new things. It is their enthusiasm and love of learning that inspires me to be a better teacher.
My Project
In order for learning to be meaningful and long-lasting, students have to be interested and actively engaged in the content. The iPads would allow me to lead highly engaging small group activities in all content areas. In reading, struggling learners and non-English speakers can hear a book come alive as it is read aloud while advanced students can engage in higher level interactive activities; in math, lower level students can play games to strengthen basic skills while higher students can work on independent projects; in science, all learners can watch concepts come alive through video demonstrations; in writing, students with fine motor difficulties can learn the skill of typing. The possibilities are endless.
This technology would give my students more independence and allow them to take ownership of their learning as they engage in small group activities.
It would increase their engagement and allow them to apply learned concepts in practical, real life settings.
