Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever picked up a book that you had a difficult time putting down? A book that you became so consumed with that you procrastinated other tasks?
The small town where I teach in Texas was hit hard by the recent recession; thousands of jobs were lost, leaving many of our students with only one working parent, and on very tight budgets.
My students often lack encouragement at home, and consequently lack inspiration to achieve. Many of them are very intelligent, and have the potential to succeed in school, but they lack the confidence and motivation that they need to do so. I long to engage my students and show them how fun reading and learning can be.
My Project
The novels that are available at my school are mostly classics that my students find to be outdated and uninteresting. Divergent, a science fiction novel, features adolescents the age of my students, which will allow them to connect to the book, while still introducing them to a culture unlike their own. Many of my students are familiar with the Hunger Games series, and truly enjoyed the books and/or movie. I'm hoping that with its similarity to the Hunger Games trilogy, Divergent will be engaging for my students as well. Engagement allows students to open up their minds and absorb so much information, and I believe that my students will be fully engaged in Divergent.
My students live in a community where education has not been ingrained as a top priority all of their lives.
They see and do some things that I never could have imagined when I was a teenager. My students need an escape. They need a good book that they can escape to, if only for a few minutes each day. I hope that you will help me to provide them with this escape and the chance to enjoy learning.
