Mrs. Canning from Davison MI is requesting Flexible Seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Engaging Students, One Flexible Seat Option at a Time

My students need the following flexible seating options to help keep them engaged in their learning; a low table for choices like pillows or scoop chairs, wobbly seats, stability balls, and clipboards.

My Students

I did not realize how much meaning my life could have until I started teaching first grade. Every year, I have a range of 24-30 students who come in with the biggest personalities, but most importantly, the biggest hearts. Each one of them was uniquely created by God, and I thank him every day for each student that he gives me.

My first grade students are curious, adventurous, deep-thinkers, problem solvers, supportive, creative, inclusive, and eager to learn.

My students come from a range of homes, both economically and dynamically. I currently work in a Title 1 building where many students participate in a free or reduced-cost lunch. This community also includes students who may live in a home ranging from single parents, both parents, or even grandparent support systems. When they enter my classroom, however, they gain another family. Every year, the next group of students comes to understand how close we are. We take care of each other, we comfort each other, we guide one another, we love one another, and we cherish one another.

My Project

In my two years of teaching first grade students, I have researched flexible seating and implemented a limited amount of flexible seating choices in my classroom. During those two years, I discovered the positive impact that differential seating can have on my students and the shift in their focus when they are given the opportunity to sit in an area different from the traditional classroom setting.

One of the main reasons I created this project was to allow my students to feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment.

As a teacher, I want to give students the option to choose a comfortable seat choice that will help engage their bodies and minds to tasks throughout our long day. First grade is a fundamental year for not only academics, but also emotional, developmental, physical, and social growth. Flexible seating such as tables, stools, and floor cushions will allow students to take on responsibility for themselves and their choices, create a more collaborative environment between peers, allow them the necessary movement they need throughout the long school day, and will allow their bodies and minds to be engaged in the learning.

Thank you for reading about my students and the project I have designed for them. I would be nothing without them and I feel fortunate to be an advocate for their development and learning.
