Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have worked in our school for 7 years. A school that is 80% Hispanic, with close to 70% qualifying for free lunch, a marker of poverty. The majority of my students are sons and daughters of immigrants, or are themselves first generation.
Yet, despite the economic disparities and tough political climate, these students have some of the best attitudes and a will to persevere.
My classes are structured environments where students are consistently working on lab activities that truly prepare them to be problem solvers and expand into other fields of science. When you walk in, you’ll notice everyone is working, and the teacher is circulating around, sometimes having deep conversations with certain groups. Students are excited about learning and genuinely helpful and empathetic towards one another.
My Project
The muscle spiker box is a product from Backyard Brains. It will be used for a series of STEM lessons where students measure muscle action potentials, and display them live on students smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
This is an excellent way to non-invasively detect the electrical activity of human muscles with simple skin surface electrodes.
My students have significant challenges in understanding and visualizing science, especially since I teach multiple inclusion classes with students who have special needs. This is a way to use current scientific tools and marry them to technology.
I am planning on teaching about muscle fatigue, action potentials, and ways to live a healthy lifestyle and maximize our bodies.
In addition to this device, I will be bringing in staff from Columbia University to help me teach neuroscience. I was a research fellow for two years and the graduate and medical students there are excellent resources and role models for my students.
