This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 11th-grade special ed English in a low income/urban district. I love teaching in general but I especially love teaching students with disabilities because when they meet a goal it can change their entire self-image and make them more positive and motivate them to continue to work hard and meet more goals. My students want to improve their mindset, reading skills, and reading stamina but they need material that they can relate to and that engages them. When I told them I would do my best to get them copies of this book they became very excited and they are hopeful we will be able to read this novel this school year.

My Project

15 copies of the novel All American Boys will be enough copies to have as a class set that I can share between the five special education courses I teach. After providing students with a list of books to choose from this novel won the top vote for book students would be the most interested in reading. The students said they feel they could relate to this novel and look forward to using this novel as a tool to build their reading stamina. I plan to use this novel over the next couple of years to engage students and foster a love of reading.
